South Dakota began automobile registration in 1905 and state-issued plates in 1913.  The 1913-15 plates were undated but in different colors each year.  The Mount Rushmore memorial was advertised with a slogan in 1939, and by featuring the presidential faces from 1952 on.  To help with enforcement of downtown parking in cities, special plates with two vertical stars in place of the hyphen were issued only to city residents in 1941-44.  The current issue of plates started in 2016.
